Botanical of Lemon Myrtle
The genus Backhousia comprises seven species of small to medium-sized trees found in the moist forests of Queensland. These trees are characterised by their opposite, glossy, aromatic leaves and dry fruits that split into two chambers as they ripen. Backhousia citriodora has lanceolate leaves that give off a strong lemon scent. In early summer it blooms with clusters of tiny white four-petalled flowers, adding beauty to any garden.
Lemon Myrtle has journeyed from its traditional role in Indigenous Australian culture, through the waves of European exploration, to a position of global recognition in modern wellness and culinary industries. Today, it represents a rich tapestry of Australian heritage, a beacon of endurance, and a shining example of the extraordinary potential inherent in native Australian botanical.
